Amazon Thursday Night Football got off to a great start with a few glitches.
Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football telecast between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers began with sketches and silhouettes of the players, while the TNF cast was listed as if it were a movie — all foreign. to the tune of “Flies Like the First Time” by K.
For good reason, it had the feel of a big-budget movie.
AmazonAMZN-3.1% signed an 11-year, $13 billion deal with the NFL last March.
Lisa Leung, Director of Member Growth and Business Intelligence at Amazon Prime, expressed her excitement about Thursday Night Football becoming a part of Prime Video. The best streaming experience clients one of our tops focuses, The best streaming experience clients are one of our top focuses,
The National Broadcast, TNF en Espanol, Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats, and TNF with Dude Perfect were the four boxes available to streaming viewers.
The main telecast complained of audio dropouts, blurred images, and buffering issues, particularly during the first half. Others said the broadcast was crisp and the problems were probably the result of poor technology in the viewer’s home.
In particular, Amazon did not have a clear icon to indicate the number of timeouts each team had. It became fitting when the Chiefs scored with 53 seconds left in the first half.
Amazon did, however, display some nice visuals, including a photo of Chargers head coach Brandon Staley and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in 1999.
Another poignant shot showed Chiefs defensive tackle, Chris Jones, sucking oxygen from the tank after Austin Eckler’s third-down stop in the fourth quarter.
Amazon signed broadcasters Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit, each worth more than $10 millionyearlyh.
Michaels, perhaps the best play-by-play sportscaster of all time, often didn’t verbalize how many yards an offensive player recorded on each play. In one instance, he didn’t mention how many yards Chiefs wide receiver McCall Hardman lost when the play was blown, ending the opening drive.
Herbstreit was sharp. He provided insightful commentary, applauding youngster Zion Johnson’s blocking of Jones.
He deftly explained how DeAndre Carter moved with 12:34 left in the fourth quarter. Carter received the first down, but Herbstreit pointed out that if the Chief’s defense was in a man-to-man scheme, the Chargers would have handed off to Carter.
And he surprisingly pointed out that gassy Chargers tight end Gerald Everett signaled to go out and Jalen Watson didn’t fight for the ball on a game-altering, 99-yard pick-6.
Herbstreit and Michaels weren’t the only options to watch.
In addition to the Spanish and Prime Vision options, Amazon had David Perfect. From their 30,000-square-foot headquarters in Frisco, Texas, the crew tried to predict what would happen while a parade of dunk tanks would be welcomed.
“We enjoyed his charm and attitude,” Leung said.
The group first met in college at Texas A&M University. Tyler Toney, twins Corey and Kobe Cotton, Garrett Hilbert, and Cody Jones formed David Perfect in 2009, growing their viral sports and comedy content to 58 million on YouTube, 16.4 million on TikTok, and 11.6 million on Instagram. gave
Unlike the Manning cast, this group didn’t discuss what was going on, and the action was hard to follow. Others, though, praised how much their kids enjoyed the David Perfect option.
It was weird that David Perfect didn’t have a halftime show. The main feed was shown instead.
The halftime, pregame, and postgame shows hosted by Charissa Thompson, Tony Gonzalez, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Richard Sherman were some of the night’s strong points.
Fitzpatrick, the former quarterback, provided the levity, saying he never completed a pass to Gonzalez, the former Chiefs tight end, but did so many times while deadpanning Sherman, a former cornerback, and Gonzalez. The greatest tight end in Chiefs history was Travis Kelis.
Sherman wisely observed at halftime that the Chargers had no fear of the Chiefs’ secondary, which had three rookies in the first half. However, the Chiefs improved in the second, holding Mike Williams to two catches and getting the pick 6.
The pregame show also featured Michael Smith, Taylor Rooks, and Andrew Whitworth in cameos.
It’s a big cast, which shows how Amazon operates.
“We see it as a way to get our customers to sign up for Prime,” Leung said, “who otherwise wouldn’t have signed up without TNF.”
