The Powerball jackpot will hit $1 billion next week because no one wins again
DES MOINES, IA — As more players lose, the Powerball prize continues growing.
On Saturday night, it happened once more when nobody matched all six numbers and took home the $825 million top prize. That means the next drawing will be for a massive $1 billion on Monday night, according to a statement from Powerball.
On Saturday night, the winning numbers were White Balls 19, 31, 40, 46, 57, and Red Power Ball 23.
The larger jackpot would rank as the second-largest in American history. the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won by three ticket holders in 2016 was the greatest payout.
While the top prize in the ad is estimated to be $1 billion, it is for winners who receive their winnings through an annuity paid over 29 years. Winners almost always choose cash, which Monday’s drawing will be an estimated $497.3 million.
Powerball said the $825 million jackpot for Saturday’s drawing jumped from $800 million on Friday as a result of strong ticket sales.
Players in the 30-year-old lottery who didn’t win the most recent grand prize shouldn’t toss their receipts away right away.
A Florida ticket holder matched all five white balls in Saturday’s drawing and added the game’s “power play” feature to increase the prize to $2 million. Six tickets matched the five white balls to win the $1 million prize, including two in California, two in Michigan, one in Maryland, and one in Texas.
Another 17 tickets won the $150,000 prize while there were 80 winners of $50,000 each. More than 3.8 million tickets won more than $38 million in cash prizes, Powerball said.
With the $206.9 million jackpot won in Pennsylvania on Aug. 3, it’s been nearly three months since anyone hit all six numbers and claimed the lottery’s biggest prize. Powerball has already had 37 consecutive draws because of its high chances of one in 292.2 million. Without a jackpot winner.
Along with 45 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, Powerball is also played there.
On Saturday, no one matched all six numbers, forfeiting the projected $825 million top prize. That means the next drawing will be for a massive $1 billion on Monday night.
