Major League Baseball’s Opening Day began on Thursday, which included the debut of new rules aimed at accelerating sluggish games.

With the debut of the pitch clock, the average length of the 15 games played on Thursdays was about 2 hours 45 minutes, up from 3 hours 6 minutes last year. The large sample of spring training games, when the clock shaves about half an hour off the average game, suggests that short games won’t be a one-day blemish.
Average Thursday game time was on par with parts of the 1980s. That’s what the game’s leaders hoped for with the new rules: to revive the days of faster, more action-packed games.
The shortest game time was a quick 2:14, shared by Rays-Tigers and Mariners-Guardians.
The pitcher now has 15 seconds to deliver, 20 seconds if there are runners on base, and be ready to strike with at least eight seconds left in the batter’s box. MLB added other changes, including banning big bases and defensive shifts, to enhance the offense of the game.
We’ve only had one day, and more data this season is likely to show other ways the new rules change the game. . The league anticipates higher batting averages and more stolen bases. The game has undergone some of the biggest changes in a single season that managers and players have ever had to adjust to, and it’s impossible to predict how things will turn out after only one day of games.
But here’s another metric from opening day: Hits per hour increased, after decades of mostly declines.
On opening day, there were about 6.1 hits per hour as opposed to about 5.3 the year before.
