National Voter Registration Day is Today What You Need to Know

The promise of democracy becomes more tangible for all of us when every eligible person is allowed to register and vote. We need our federal leaders to do everything in their ability to defend and promote the fundamental right to vote

Today is National Voter Registration Day

Last year, the Biden administration issued an executive order to promote federal agencies’ inclusion of voter registration in their day-to-day interactions with eligible voters—a process that many state agencies, such as state motor vehicle departments and public assistance offices, have already done. It has been well established for decades. In the face of attacks on voting rights across the country, this executive order to promote voting access was an important step by the Biden administration to protect our democracy.

The administration has made progress, and it’s good news to hear that the Department of the Interior has joined with Kansas and New Mexico states to designate Haskell voter registration agencies, including Indian Nations University and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute.

Work has begun, and we celebrate the department. worked with a handful of states to secure designations for its facilities for Veterans Affairs, serving veterans as voter registration agencies. These initiatives are important and will help bring our Native American communities and our veterans back to full civic participation.

But that’s not enough, and the federal government can do more. This executive order could ensure that thousands of veterans, students, low-income people, people of color, and others have the opportunity to register to vote, not just on voter registration day or month, but year-round. every day.

National Voter Registration Day 2023

We hope that the Biden administration will honor the commitments already made by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Indian Health Services (IHS) to expand access to voter registration for the millions of people they need. We serve a diverse population, many of whom are low-income and/or people of color. Additionally, here are a few other key steps the Biden administration could take to expand access to voter registration:

• the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services: USCIS employees are required to ensure that all newly naturalized citizens are allowed to register to vote.

• Education Department: Include voter registration as part of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application process. More than 17 million students file the FAFSA annually. An estimated 73 percent of low-income students, plus 83 percent of black students, 74 percent of Hispanic students, 54 percent of Asian students, and 77 percent of Native American students, complete the FAFSA. Adding the opportunity to register to vote in the FAFSA application process will provide voter registration opportunities for millions of Americans who are either unregistered or who need to update their registration to a new address.

Strong enforcement of this executive order is one of the most effective steps this administration can take to secure the right to vote for all eligible Americans. We urge the Biden-Harris administration and federal agencies to make the executive order promoting voting access a top priority.

This November, we can’t forget how important it is for all eligible voters to register to vote and update their registration when they’ve moved. Whether it’s for the Secretary of State or a local election administrator, every elected official has a role to play in protecting our right to vote. Therefore, voting for your values in this upcoming election is important. You have the power to change your country.
