Game Recap: Cowboys Come Back for 27-26 Win
It may have been the last game of the preseason, but with players fighting for their NFL lives, fans were treated to an entertaining matchup that saw the Dallas Cowboys pull 27 late against the Seattle Seahawks. Won by -26.
As the Cowboys played backups extensively throughout the night while nine of the Seahawks’ 11 offensive starts were on the field, it was perhaps no surprise that Dallas fell behind early. But the team battled back, tied the score late in the third quarter and then came from behind again in the fourth to win.
Dallas’ defensive performance brought back memories of their NFL-leading 34 takeaways from the previous season. The group earned five in that game – four interceptions and one fumble recovery. The Cowboys gave up 328 yards but held Seattle to just 15 per cent success on third downs, with the Seahawks also only good on one of five trips into the red zone.

On the other side of the ball, Will Grier spent most of the game behind centre for the Cowboys, but may not have done enough to overtake Cooper Rush for the backup quarterback job. In an up-and-down effort, he threw for just 88 yards, though that included two touchdown tosses for a passer rating of 94.5. Rush completed just two of five attempts for 40 yards, but was involved in just one series of the game before getting the rest of the night off.
Seahawks vs. Cowboys record
Once again, the Cowboy’s offence performed well on the ground, totalling 128 yards. Rookie Aaron Champlin led the way with 54 yards on 13 carries before leaving the game late with an injury. Malik Davis maintained his solid play with 44 yards on 15 tries to make the roster.
Overall, the Cowboys racked up 286 yards of offence, but unlike their counterparts, were successful on three of five trips into the red zone while also converting 38 per cent of their third-down attempts.
First trimester
The battle for the backup quarterback spot saw Rush carry the offence for the first series before Grier took over the duties in the second half. Neither was able to get much going in the first quarter, though, as the offence gained a combined 21 yards on their first four possessions.
Meanwhile, Seattle was still trying to determine who its starting quarterback would be, meaning the defence faced several Seahawk starters. But the unit limited Geno Smith’s 53-yard field goal attempt on the visitors’ first series before Drew Lock was picked off by Israel Makwamo on their next possession, his second safety this preseason. There was an obstacle.
But after the Cowboys failed to convert a fourth-and-4 at the Seattle 44-yard line, the Seahawks needed just two plays to reach the end zone. The score came thanks to a 35-yard completion to Pennyhart, which gave Seattle a 10-0 lead, despite some close coverage by rookie cornerback Darron Bland.
Second quarter
The Cowboys finally went ahead on their first series of the second quarter, driving the ball six times for 32 yards to land at the Seattle 6-yard line. Dallas had to settle with a Brett Maher field goal from 28 yards out, but the home team had scored.
Although the Seahawks answered with a field goal of their own, a 29-yarder, the Cowboys got their second interception of the night on Seattle’s next series. Nahshon Wright stepped in front of Locke’s offering and returned the pick 22 yards to the Seahawks’ 32.
With just over two minutes left in the half, the Cowboys saw Grier scamper for 16 yards and then Davis more to set up Dallas with first-and-goal at the 1-yard line with 1:24 left. Rushed for 13 yards. With two snaps remaining, Grier fired a dart into the back of the end zone to wideout Simi Fehoku to narrow the score to 13-10 at the break.
Third quarter
That lead would soon return to a 10-point lead for Seattle, which opened the second half with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in another touchdown. Dallas had a chance to stop the drive when a lock pass fell incomplete on third-and-7 at the Cowboys’ 45-yard line. But a tough passing penalty on Sam Williams kept the Seahawks’ drive alive and eventually resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by DJ Dallas.
The Cowboys rallied, though. Grier returned and led the offence on a 10-play, 58-yard drive that set up Maher for a 35-yard field goal that was good. And then on Seattle’s next series, undrafted rookie safety Marquez Bell came down with a tipped ball and returned it 29-yards to the Seahawks’ 13-yard line.
Two plays later, receiver Brandon Smith made a beautiful catch in the end zone, catching a tiptoe over the left sideline. And with that, the game was suddenly tied at 20-20 and into the final quarter.
Fourth quarter
Both teams had field goal chances for the first nine minutes of the fourth frame. Unfortunately, the Seahawks were good at them while Dallas was not. use of the cou, Seattle’s attempts were a pair of 28-yard scrambles while up the middle, Maher broke out for a long 61-yard attempt that appeared to go the distance, but sailed wide left.
The Cowboys weren’t done, though, and especially tight end Payton himself Fearless shot. The rookie caught a 15-yard pass early in the drive and took a big hit that cracked his helmet and earned him an unnecessary roughing penalty and another 15-yard penalty. But he shook it off and bounced back another Ben DiNucci pass and sprinted 14 yards before diving across the goal line. Dallas had a 27-26 lead thanks to a Hender shot attempt.
During the final four minutes, the Cowboys’ defence would be tested but held its ground. That included a snap by the Seahawks that resulted in the ball bouncing directly into the arm of rookie linebacker Story Jackson, and then on the final possession of Seattle’s night safety, Joanna Thomas, for the team’s fourth interception. Grabbed a tipped pass.
That sealed the victory for the Cowboys, as the team finished the 2022 exhibition schedule with a 2-1 record, their first winning preseason since 2017.
