Chelsea v Tottenham result: Harry Kane scores a stoppage-time equalizer as Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel clash

Harry Kane scored a stoppage-time equalizer as Tottenham Hotspur grabbed a 2-2 draw against Chelsea in a low-spirited encounter that featured Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel.

Reece James’ strike on 78 minutes looked to have given the Blues all three points in this London derby at Stamford Bridge, but Kane saved a point for the visitors with a 96th-minute corner kick.

Chelsea dominated much of the match and opened the scoring through Claudio Koulibaly who brilliantly registered his first Premier League goal, volleying home a Marc Cockrell corner.

Spurs leveled in the second half in controversial circumstances when Pierre-Emile Hodgberg fired past Eduard Mendy despite Chelsea’s possible foul and appeals for offside. It prompted the first clash between Conte and Tuchel on the touchline.

Sterling set up James to put Chelsea 2-1 up with just 12 minutes remaining, but Kane had the final say, nodding home in added time. Conte and Tuchel were once again embroiled in a furious clash after the final whistle, with the Chelsea boss pulling Conte away after shaking hands, and both were shown red cards.

The Premier League has witnessed many managerial clashes over the years and the growing rivalry between Conte and Tuchel was on full display even after the competition ended when both coaches were sacked by Anthony Taylor.

It was a high-energy, high-intensity contest and that was reflected in the behavior of Conte and Tuchel on the touchline. The Premier League has lacked managerial beef for years.

Chelsea’s lack of prominence could be a problem.

Chelsea endeavored 23 crosses against Tottenham and finished only four. This explains many of the problems the home side face in making the most of their dominance of the ball and territory, with Spurs repelling aimless deliveries into their box.

Kai Havertz is capable of winning challenges in the air alongside Koulibaly and Thiago Silva, but Chelsea’s front line is not built to get on the end of crosses into the box from open play. This is certainly something that Tuchel will analyze during the match.

Conte’s changes worked.

On the balance of play, Chelsea was the fighting team for 90 minutes of this match. The Blues registered more shots than the Spurs and finished with a higher expected goals figure (1.53 to 1.06). However, the changes made by Conte in the second half worked and were a big factor in Tottenham grabbing a point.

The decision to drop Ryan Sessegnon for Richarlison saw Spurs switch to a 4-2-4 formation. It conceded Centric control in the center, but it made the match a more open affair and allowed Tottenham to come back more often.

Chelsea’s new signings are making an impact.

Cucurella and Koulibaly combined for Chelsea’s opening goal and the Blues’ new signing is already making his presence known. While Conte has largely opted to hold back his new additions in the first two games of the season, Tuchel has admitted to throwing them straight in.

Sterling has yet to score his first Premier League goal as a Chelsea player, but he provided an assist in the match. Meanwhile, Cucurella gives Chelsea an outlet on the left while Koulibaly adds physicality and presence to his backline. All three players have improved Tuchel’s side.
